04/07/2015 – Tuesday – Rest
Had planned to go out just for a little 3 mile run to keep the legs moving, but this whole working late thing again is getting in the way. Probably for the best anyway. It’s not like it would be any actual training, just to clear my mind.
04/08/2015 – Wednesday – Rest
Yeaaaah. So…work. Oh, and packing – something I neglected to do the past few nights. So now of course, since I have to be up at 3:30am to make it to the airport to catch my flights and I still need to go get a few last minute items, I’m not going to be able to even make it out for a little stroll around the block. I think my dogs hate me.
04/09/2015 – Thursday – Plane Travel Day
Two plane flights and I’m into Saint Louis by the middle of the afternoon. I wore recovery compression tights for the entire trip and I’m hoping that will help keep the blood circulating through my legs and ward off jet lag. Probably should have drank more water to help fight off jet lag and to get hydrated. Oh well.
04/10/2015 – Friday – Car Travel Day
Picked up my Go! St Louis road Marathon bib and packet then hopped in the backseat of a car for our 10 hour drive up north to Minnesota. Where we’re going is north-northwest from St Louis, but of course the fastest way from Missouri to Minnesota takes us east, then north through Illinois, farther north up through Wisconsin before diving west into southeast Minnesota. We stopped for quick bite of dinner then to the start line an hour before the start of the race. Zumbro midnight 50 Miler – here I am, it’s race day (night?)!

Zumbro midnight 50 Miler – Zumbro Bottoms State Forest, Minnesota
The race started at 12:01am and I used my headlamp for the first 6.5 hours of the race which is the longest I’ve ever run using a headlamp. Thankfully, my friend Jerod and I ran 50 of the 51 miles together so it never felt to isolated. At mile 49, I clocked an 8:03 minute mile to get to an aid station to tell them that there was a guy about a mile away with a ruptured achilles tendon stopping to puke every couple hundred feet trying to walk it in to the aid station. This would be the only part of the race we didn’t run together, although I did wait for him so we could finish the race together. The weirdest part about starting a race at midnight is you have absolutely no idea what you’re running through except for a general sense of when there’s a cliff or bluff off to one side. It’s almost like someone has put a pillow to your ear. You feel the void or rather you don’t feel or hear the reverberation off anything and that’s how you know that you probably shouldn’t go bounding off in that direction. One great thing about starting at midnight for a looped course is it’s almost like running two races. There is the ‘night course’ and there is the ‘day course’ where even though you are running the same loop and it is completely the same, it is still completely different. Took us a while to finish, but we did although we couldn’t really stick around to enjoy it properly as we had to hop back in the car 30 minutes later for the return 10 hour car ride back to St Louis.

Go! St Louis road Marathon – St Louis, Missouri
We arrived back in St Louis at midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning and it took a little while to get unpacked, showered up, and everything laid out for the race a few hours later. Finally crashing to bed by 1:30am, I was out like a rock. Getting up at 5:30am, just 4 hour later, was really not as hard as I thought it would be or should be. Out the door by 6:15am and I was off and running by 7:00am. On the way back to St Louis yesterday while in the car, I said a few times both to myself and to anyone who wasn’t asleep and was listening that with my sore legs and feet I wasn’t sure I’d be able to run the Go! Marathon. Well, it could have been the energy that road marathons bring or the NSAID’s (yeah, I know, it’s probably not the best idea to take before a marathon, but I did) but I felt great. A little sore in the hamstrings and a little stiff pretty much everywhere, but considering I was in a car for 10 of the previous 15 hours, I was pretty good actually. Told myself willingly to take it nice and slow, but somehow I easily found myself in with the 4:00 hour finishing pace group without really trying, without really struggling, and without really realizing it. All was going well until mile 22 when my legs finally realized what I was doing to them and said, “whoa whoa whoa, easy now cowboy!” and so I struggled slower through the next 2 miles before finally succumbing to a run/walk at mile 24. That lasted for a full mile and at mile 25 the crowds picked up again. There’s a little known rule in the road marathon rule book that you’re not allowed to walk the last mile. Seriously, look it up. I think they kick you out of the race and bar you from running marathons ever again if you walk in the last mile. It doesn’t matter if you’re tired or not. People publicly berate you and yell your name, even telling you, “it’s all downhill from here” (which by the way, always a lie) or “run like you stole something” or “run like Ryan Gosling is at the finish line holding a puppy” or “run now poop later.” So I did for all of those reasons. I’m not a fast runner anyway, but I finished, recording my second fastest marathon.

Such a whirlwind, but absolutely, completely amazing, fulfilling weekend! Also a definite confidence booster for Mohican. There’s still a lot of work left to do, but I feel like I’m at least headed in a somewhat vague right direction with my training!
