Training Week: 03/06/17 – 03/12/17

This was a down week in all aspects of the meaning of a down week. My legs were defiantly fatigued. My desire to run was low. My (scheduled) miles were almost half as much as it has been. It rained almost all week. I needed this down week to be even more down than it already was. Last week’s faux easy week was probably, in hindsight, pushing the line. The fatigued legs bled over into the majority of this week and culminated into one of the harder Sunday ‘easy’ runs in a while (minus the company of my always fantastic trail friends). Three more training blocks until Bighorn 100 miler…

Monday – Capitol Hill and Seattle Bouldering Project
2.5m, 0:23, 200′ and 2:00 Bouldering
I didn’t run fast, but I climbed well.

Tuesday – Dinner with Joseph
Joseph was a transplant from Kentucky who used to curl with us, but has since transplanted himself to the Baltimore/DC area. His work still has him rolling into town once every 3-6 months and Jeff, Mark, and I always meet up with him for dinner on ‘the Eastside’ which usually means some random (but delicious) place in Redmond, but this time meant a random place in Bellevue. We went to the Lunchbox Laboratory and I ordered the biggest item on the menu, a Big Mac ‘MeriCAN* which is really just a fancified (and quite more expensive) actual Big Mac with a side of loaded mac du jour which is just mac and cheese with bacon. All good food as it always is and always good to see a good friend as it always is.

Wednesday – Capitol Hill and “Life In A Day | The Western State’s 100 Mile Endurance Run”

Kate, Tucker and I took our time on the usual Capitol Hill loop. Afterwards we watched Billy Yang Films “Life In A Day | The Western State’s 100 Mile Endurance Run” which is a beautiful, powerful, inspiring film.

“On June 25, 2016 a collection of trail and ultra runners toed the line at the historic Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run running from Squaw Valley to Auburn. Among the 350+ were 4 women vying for the win and a coveted top 10 finish which is recognized annually at this prestigious event (featuring) Magdalena Boulet, Devon Yanko, Kaci Lickteig and Anna Mae Flynn. This is a story of their 100 mile journey of which the great Ann Trason compares to living a “life in a day”. “

Thursday – Seattle Granite Curling Club
2:00 Curling
We’ve been curling now for 11 years and you’d think we’d be better, but we’re not. It could be that we only play once a week for half a year or because we don’t ever practice or because we’re just not that good. Any of those three could be true, but it doesn’t really matter because it’s time with friends. I’ve been the Skip for the past many years which really just means I do the minimal amount of sweeping between the four of us, so I’m not sure it really counts as an ‘athletic activity’ for me. For the other three though, it’s definitely a workout when they’re sweeping, both physically and cardiovascularly.

Friday – Bowling at The Garage
I stepped in when my friend had to leave and the first three rolls gave me a Turkey. It was all downhill from there.

Saturday – Magnolia and Discovery Park

I read the other day that since October we’ve something to the tune of somewhere between 3-7 days of sunny mild (for the time of year) days. This was not one of them. It rained for almost the entire day as it has been since it seems like since last year and I really did not want to go run, so I called up my good running partners in crime, Nate and Mike, and as they always are, were game for a quick city run. We started at Nate’s and worked our way around the Magnolia Bluff, down the steps and then over to Discovery Park where Nate turned for home and Mike and did a quick clockwise and counterclockwise loop before stopping back through Seven Hills Running Shop, where we wished Adam good luck on his upcoming run to some little known race in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee before circling back to Nate’s place. Whenever I run with Mike we always both end up running faster than we intend or really want to and this time was no different.

Sunday – Cougar Mountain

Mike, Nate, Cam and I frolicked through the wet, muddy trails more than happy to stop at all trail intersections so we could all stay together. I thought by getting everyone together at 9am, it would be better because it’s an hour later than we normally meet up, but I forgot about the whole leap forward time change thing and so 9am really felt just like the 8am we always meet up. Curses outdated reason for a time change! Curses! For some reason none of the run was easy for me. My legs felt dead and I walked a considerable amount of miles that I never walk. My calves hurt and I was far more winded than I usually am. We all had some kind of problem or another and the run eventually turned into a time-on-feet kind of workout.

It’s all downhill if you start with a Turkey.
